Interviews: Part 1 και part 2

Τhe true story about the orca who tried to make friends with people, has traveled the world's film festivals, winning 25 awards along the way.

What happens when a wild orca tries to make friends with people - not for food, but for companionship? Should humans welcome him or turn away?
In 2001, when Luna was just a baby, he found himself alone in Nootka Sound, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, more than 200 miles away from his family. Orcas normally spend their entire lives together, but Luna was lost.
Without other whales, Luna tried to make contact with humans. But law and science told people to stay away. Yet the same social instincts that drove Luna to seek companionship also brought people to him, in spite of the law.
As Luna got close to people, he became both treasured and feared. To natives he was the spirit of a chief. To boaters he was a goofy friend. To conservationists he was a cause. To scientists he was trouble. To officials he was a danger. As conflict and tragedy stained the waters, Luna became a symbol of the world's wildest beauty: easy to love, hard to save.
This film explores both the nature of friendship and the friendships of nature, and has moved and charmed all ages. With 17 international awards and numerous nominations, Saving Luna is a film the whole family will enjoy.
Saving Luna began with an assignment from Smithsonian magazine to write a story about a curious conflict that was developing in Nootka Sound on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. A whale was trying to make friends with people, and the government was trying to prevent him from doing so.
Husband and wife team Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm went to the village of Gold River in the spring of 2004 for three weeks. The short version of what happened there is this: like the thief who came to steal the money, they both fell in love with the subject of this story, and didn't leave. They stayed for three years.
The long version is more complicated than that. It involved a government effort to move Luna, a First Nations effort to prevent the move, and the long consequences for the whale after the initial conflict on the water ended with an uncertain outcome.
Saving Luna is a film by Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit with the support of Telefilm Canada's Theatrical Documentary Program. Produced by Mountainside Films in association with CBC Newsworld.

Nature Sock: When Killer Whales Attack (2011)

Δείτε το εδώ Exploring the life of the killer whale. Streamlined and cunning, killer whales have many hunting techniques. They live and hunt together in cooperative pods much like a pack of wolves, and work together as they hunt. Groups of orcas cooperate to herd fish into a compact area so that they're easier to eat. They will also slap their tails onto the water's surface, causing a wave to wash prey off ice floes and into the water. A pod will also surround a much larger animal, chasing, biting and wearing it down until it becomes a meal. They’ve also been seen playing with a meal, subjecting the poor victim to torment before eventually eating it - isolated, outnumbered and overwhelmed, their prey stands no chance.

Off the coast of San Francisco, an unexpected killing challenged the great white shark's supremacy as the ultimate predator when one became prey to a killer whale. Whale-watchers witnessed a stunning act of nature as a killer whale rose to the water's surface with a great white in its mouth and held it there for 15 minutes. Even more amazing, biologist Peter Pyle was nearby and able to get underwater footage of two whales feeding on the shark. They ate the liver and then departed the scene, leaving the rest to the birds. The incident raised questions, such as how did the killer whale take the huge shark without a struggle? And why did the whales only eat the shark's liver?

Killers of Eden (1998)

For thousands of years, killer whales have hunted the great baleen whales in every ocean on earth, yet only in one place have they ever co-operated with humans to hunt whales, and then largely only with one family, the Davidsons.  “Killers of Eden” is the extraordinary story of the contract between man and one of nature’s most powerful and intelligent creatures.

Each year for more than a century on Australia’s far south east coast,  autumn moved into winter and the killer whales would return to Eden from the Antarctic and lie in wait. Their prey were the baleen whales journeying to and from their breeding grounds hundreds of kilometers up the coast. Three generations of the Davidson family worked with the killer whales, often invited by the killers and led out to sea to join in the hunts. A few members of the pod of orcas would swim right into the mouth of the kiah river where the Davidsons had their two isolated houses on the opposite side of the bay from the township of Eden. They would then breach or thrash their tails on the water surface untill the whalers emerged and rowed their boats out to meet them. The Davidsons called this behaviour “flop-tailing”. No other Eden whalers were ever visited in this manner.  On cloudy moonless nights, the Davidson crews would follow the glowing bioluminescent trails of the orcas which would light up the sea.

Throughout every ocean on earth, killer whales are the masters of the sea. Like wolves on land, these fearsome predators often hunt in packs, working together to snare their next meal. You'll journey around the globe to see their extraordinary hunting techniques in action. Plunge beneath the waves to watch the whales round up schools of herring, which they stun with flicks of their powerful tails. Discover the whales "playing with their food" by tossing their prey around in a frenzied game that hones their hunting skills. And witness the amazing spectacle of these huge whales hurling themselves onto the beach to snatch their unsuspecting prey. You will gain a new appreciation of these magnificent creatures as you come face-to-face with Killer Whales.

The oceans cover 70% of Earth's surface, and are almost entirely unexplored. The fact that even in the best-known regions, we have sampled less than 1% of the seafloor - we are now beginning to realise the deep is home to a spectacular diversity of organisms. With technological advances allowing scientists to go deeper and deeper beneath the waves, catch a glimpse of the deep-sea creatures lurking below.
